Stocky is gone: how to keep cost per item accurate in Shopify (2026)
Shopify's help center states that the Stocky app is no longer available after August 31, 2026, and that merchants need to move to Shopify's inventory management features (Shopify Help Center, Stocky). Shopify's native purchase orders record supplier costs, but their help pages do not describe spreading freight or duties across lines, and Cost per item stays one static value per variant. The workable routine: compute the landed cost of each receipt, then write it to Cost per item with the bulk editor or a product CSV import.
What changed and what stayed
| Topic | What Shopify's help center says |
|---|---|
| Stocky | "No longer available after August 31st, 2026"; it came with POS Pro, or free for stores that installed it before May 4, 2020 (Stocky) |
| Native purchase orders | A PO lists products, quantities, costs, payment terms and supplier; receiving happens on a linked inventory transfer (Purchase orders) |
| Cost on a new PO line | Taken from your previous POs with that supplier, otherwise defaults to the variant's Cost per item (Creating purchase orders) |
| Supplier currency | The PO can be in the supplier's currency; the cost summary also shows the converted total in the store currency (same page) |
| Freight and duties | The transfer can "add cost adjustments"; the pages do not say how they are split across lines or whether Cost per item is updated |
| Cost per item | "Contains static data"; profit is reported only for variants that had a cost recorded when sold (Profit reports) |
Test a receipt in your own admin before relying on cost adjustments: check the variant's Cost per item before and after receiving.
A routine that works without an app
- Create the PO in Shopify as before, in the supplier's currency.
- When the goods and the bills are in (supplier invoice, freight, insurance, customs entry, broker, bank fees), compute the landed cost per SKU: convert at the rate you paid, spread each bill with its key (weight or volume for freight, value or HS rate for duties), divide by units received.
- Decide replace or average. If the SKU still has stock at an older cost, a weighted average keeps margins honest: (stock before receipt × current cost + landed total of the new units) ÷ (stock before receipt + new units).
- Update Cost per item: small receipts in the bulk editor; larger ones with a product CSV import.
- File the allocation (spreadsheet or PDF) with the supplier invoice and customs entry for your accountant.
Updating Cost per item by CSV without breaking products
From Shopify's CSV documentation (using CSV files, importing products):
| Rule | Consequence for a cost update |
|---|---|
| Required columns to update: URL handle and Title | Keep both |
| "Overwrite products with matching handles" replaces values for all columns included in the CSV | Only include the columns you want to change |
| A non-required column left out keeps its value; a blank one is overwritten as blank | Drop price, inventory, images, SEO columns instead of leaving them blank |
| SKU without Option1 name and Option1 value deletes the variant options | Keep the option columns with SKU |
| A product CSV can't exceed 15 MB | Split large catalogs |
Start from a fresh products export, keep Title, URL handle, the option name/value columns, SKU and Cost per item for the products on the receipt, change Cost per item, import with overwrite ticked. The landed cost calculator produces that trimmed file from your export and the receipt, with a replace or weighted-average option.
FAQ
Can I still get my Stocky purchase orders?
Shopify's Stocky page does not describe an export after the shutdown and advises against uninstalling Stocky unless Shopify Support recommends it, because data from an uninstalled app might not be retrievable (Stocky). Ask Shopify Support what remains accessible for your store.
Does changing Cost per item fix past profit reports?
No. Profit is reported with the cost recorded at the time of each sale, so update costs as soon as a receipt is costed.
Do I need a paid inventory app?
Not for costing. An app helps with forecasting, reorder points or multi-location receiving. For landed cost per receipt, a calculation per shipment plus a CSV or bulk-editor update is enough.
